hi Mike - but that's exactly what I was (in my initial rambling 
response) referring to, also. It seems we agree. I think these notions 
are again quite fashionable in some circles: the 'objective' reality as 
something we can only access (and articulate) through perception and 
'speculation' (ie intersubjectivity or a kind) is prevalent in (my 
admittedly early-stage reading around) critical realism, eg.

When we ask what is 'good music'  - or at least when I do, if I did - 
it's an attempt at a question on 'truth', right? - Is it 'true' ('real') 
that piece A is good music? My sense is that, as you say, speculation 
(intersubjectivity) is a realm that question visits. So looks like we're 
juggling back and forth together.

Though I'm not sure I buy the thinking that if you gather enough 
subjective speculation, an objective  'truth' emerges:
