Sadly, I wasn't.... I'm old, but I'm not *that* old... ;-)
But I've loved the recording of that performance for many years.
I've seen Fripp perform live a number of times, though (both solo and with various King
Crimsons), including all of his "soundscapes" shows at the World Financial Center winter
garden.
At the conclusion of one of the WFC shows he stood up, walked over to a large brown paper
bag that had been left at the side of the stage, and extracted a package of Fig Newtons,
which he proceeded to distribute to attendees who approached him.
He smiled, with quiet resignation, through the inevitable "Fripp Newton" quips... and he
cracked everyone up when he chided one man for pushing his way through the cookie queue
in front of a little girl...
As I recall, he had been asked to present the 'inaugural' performance in the WFC after it had
been rebuilt, post-9/11, but couldn't because he was touring with KC at the time. Such a
beautiful space (and the home of countless fantastic *free* shows, including Fripp, Eno
(installation), Jon Hassell, Kronos Quartet, BOaC All-Stars, Alloy Orchestra, Huun Huur Tuu,
Gamelan Son of Lion, etc.)... It was extremely moving to see it when it re-opened, looking
exactly as it did pre-...
