Re: (amb) What other music do you listen to?
I also love Talk Talk, Jason. I have all their records (on actual
records) and listen to them often. There's something very unique all in
their music. Even the early pop stuff. This melancholic (and yet not
sad), observing quality. And the music is very special, deep and
interesting. I find parallels in Radiohead to this. Another band I really
really like.

So then I'll side-step into other areas - jazz, electronica, or indie or
post-punk or modern classical or (place most genres here).
I don't think I'm answering the question Adeline asked appropriately
though. So, knowing we all have the context down...
Ambient is my bread and butter...but for other meals I have a voracious
appetite for things that have the sound and feel of latter-day Talk
Talk.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again...love, love TT's
"laughingstock" and "spirit of eden" discs.
There is very little that is better in my book. It's
served as the basis for seeking out anything directly or remotely
influenced by them. It certainly is a rare strain of music.
There are the obvious
followers like Bark Psychosis, Pluramon and Bed and the ones that have a
natural inclination like Movietone, Tindersticks, Slowdive's
"Pygmalion"
or The Necks or even The Dirty Three.
It's a kind of music that is anchored with rhythm, has an almost
undefinable textural fabric, an appreciation for silence in between
notes, and a mixture of
large genres without being exactly pigeonholed into any. In
the case of TT, it's chamber music vs. a rock structure soaked in modern
jazz that will
use errors to it's own advantage.
I listen to "laughingstock" almost 11 years after first hearing
it, and still marvel at the complexity of what has proven to be IMHO the
finest music
I've ever listened to.
Alongside ambient that is.

I never used to listen to country either (with a bit of an exception for
Johnny Cash - I don't own any, but I've a certain fondness for a few of
his songs), but I've since discovered Jolie Holland and the Be Good
Tanyas. That's about it though! I'm sure there's more out there I could
like, but I've not really had much of an urge to go looking. So country
will probably remain one of the gaps in my music collection too.
