RE: (amb) What other music do you listen to?
I can't say I'm a fan of country music at all, but I do like bluegrass. I =
don't mind some of the "old-time" country artists - Patsy
Cline, Hank Williams, etc., but that's about it. I think of bluegrass as mo=
re instrumental, and country as more vocal (and with
a vocal sound I generally don't like). Just a couple of weeks ago, I was si=
tting in a diner in the tiny town of Buckhorn, Kentucky,
listening to bluegrass while some of the locals clogged and danced to their=
favorite tunes. Pure joy - I've never seen a group
of people enjoy music more.
Other than ambient, I listen to bits of classical and minimalism (Steve Rei=
ch, etc,), a bit of progressive rock (a holdover from
my college days), some Berlin School (old T. Dream, Klaus Schulze, Kraftwer=
k), and Underworld. I listen to rock when my son
is driving (and therefore has control of the radio). I used to listen to a =
lot of jazz, but not so much anymore. There just isn't
enough time to listen to all the good music that's been made. Probably 90% =
of my listening is ambient.
Most of my listening is while I'm at work. I'm a technical writer, so I alm=
ost always have to listen to music without vocals, unless
I'm doing something particularly mindless. I also listen just before I go t=
o sleep.

Why is there such a strong aversion towards country music? Personally, I'v=
e grown to love the genre. I resonate with many of the values expressed in=
country music. No, not the beer drinking cowboy chasing hell of a time, b=
ut the humble gratefulness expressed by those simple, hardworking, average =
men and women. Here in the city, it is something I miss. Maybe it is my n=
ostalgia for upstate New York, central Pennsylvania...and a simpler way of =
life.
So really, I'm looking for answers, why the aversion to country music?
