Had the chance to go check out the Big Top tour for free at the Riviera
Theatre in chicago last night. What a disappointment. Both Mayday and
System7 weren't on the bill, as advertised in the local Reader write-up
just days before. The sound system was terrible and to top it off, the
final insult: Juan Atkins spun right after Moby's set was over (half the
place cleared out!) and was forced to compete with some asnine stage act
where a woman dressed in green spandex did this lame psuedo-trapeez
act. It really reminded me of a bad grammer school play. What an
injustice to a man who's influence and contributions made it possible
for there to be such an event held in the first place!
808 state had technical problems and when they did resolve them, their
sound was completely muddy and drenched in bad grunge bass. Maybe it
was the crowd or maybe it was the venue's sound but it was a really
sorry show. I'd have been really pissed if I had paid the exhorbitant
$30.00 door. I hope that the show gets better as it moves on to other
cities.
